Green Hill Zone is a picturesque tropical paradise region with green forests, beautiful blue lakes, and brown checkered soil. Green Hill has many flowers in the foreground, as well as waterfalls and clouds in the backdrop. Hazards include crumbling platforms. It's not all natural goodness, though, as Dr. Ivo Robotnik has installed spike pits and set his ubiquitous robotic minions loose on the verdant landscape. Geographically speaking, the Zone is located on South Island.
Sonic used to live there, and left Tails there when heading off on adventures (he soon stopped this practice). Because of this, the Zone used to be a target by Dr. Robotnik.
Johnny Lightfoot, Sally Acorn, and Tufftee used to live there. The former two would shortly after move to the Emerald Hill Zone, and Sonic shifted his attention there.
Robotnik made one last attack on the Zone during Christmas, when he set up a fake Christmas celebration with the intention of blowing up everyone who attended.
The Zone went unnoticed for years, until it was targeted by Metallix during the Mega Mack bombings. Despite Sonic's best efforts, the Zone was blanketed with the chemical and rendered uninhabitable.
After Dr. Eggman initiates Operation: Clean Sweep, after everyones memories have been erased and then banished to the past, Sonic finds himself running in Green Hill Zone investigating the disappearance of animals. Here he encounters the Badniks Motobug and Newtron, the latter of which takes him to its leader, Snively Kintobor, who is gathering animals in capsules. Sonic defeats Snively and destroys the capsules, freeing Sally, Antoine, and Boomer from within one of them. Sally then leads the others to Marble Zone as part of a shortcut to Dr. Robotnik's lair.

- Main article: Checker-Wrecker Ball
Dr. Ivo Robotnik appears with a wrecking ball that swings back and forth trying to hit Sonic, who must avoid it by standing on two platforms and jumping over it. He can destroy it by jumping off of the platforms and into Robotnik's machine 8 times.

Trivia
Edit
- In the Japanese version of "Cruise Blues," the twentieth episode of Sonic X, Cream states that she once lived in Green Hill Zone although this has never been confirmed in the game series itself.
- In Sonic Chronicles, while Sonic reminisces on the "good times" he had in Green Hill Zone, Tails replies on how Robotnik's kidnapping of small animals and turning them into robots could have been "good times." Strangely, Tails first appeared in Sonic 2 and never officially went through Green Hill Zone during the events of Sonic 1.
- The beta name for Emerald Hill Zone was Green Hill Zone.
- The song "Dreams of an Absolution" has a similar tune to the background music of Green Hill Zone. Singer Lee Brotherton has said that this was not intended, but appreciated.
- Sonic was originally a much lighter shade of blue, which is evident in most of his early concept art. His sprite was darkened at the last minute as it was difficult to see against Green Hill Zone's ocean background.
- Before Sonic the Hedgehog was released, the visuals for Green Hill Zone were inspired by computer-generated 3D graphics, an up-and-coming style that was gaining prominence at the time. Out of all of the game's seven zones, Green Hill Zone took the longest to complete (a full half year), as the graphics were redone several times.
- In the 16-bit version for the Sega Genesis, this is one of two zones in which an Invincibility TV can help with the boss, the other being Spring Yard Zone. It is hidden in a high tree which Sonic can smash by leaping off the end of the hill at top speed. In fact, the boss can be defeated before it even wears off.
- Stage 1-1 of the "Sonic Simulator" in Sonic Colors is, in fact, a rebuild of Act 1 of the 16-bit Version.
Instruction Manual Description
Edit
| “ | Go around the giant loop, tumble down tunnels, and jump over crumbling cliffs before you get a chance to blink. Bounce on Springboards but not on spikes. Ouch! |

Sonic Team Commentary (from Sonic Jam Strategy Guide)
Edit
| “ | This is the stage that took the designers the longest to get properly arranged, and from the beginning of development the graphics were probably redone 4 or five times. The art and maps for this zone alone took half a year to produce! At the time, we were aware of computer graphics, but we tried to get that look by hand (laugh) | „ |

Technical Notes
Edit
Green Hill Zone is followed by Marble Zone, which uses some of Green Hill's tiles.
There are some bizarre bumper-flower-things you can place in the ending with debug mode. This bumper is actually one of the bumpers from Spring Yard Zone and the special stage, using art from Green Hill to define itself. There is also one pink flower.
Green Hill is a very commonly hacked level, and is usually the level of choice for beginning hackers, since it uses relatively few tags and the tiles, for the most part, fit together.
